How we make Kokedamas

A kokedama isn't manufactured. It's made. There's a process — but there's also intuition, patience, and the natural variation of each plant. Here's what happens between the beginning and the moment the kokedama enters your home.

01

Choosing the plant

Everything starts with the plant. We select each species carefully: it must be suitable for indoors, resilient during transport, and beautiful in the way it grows. We prefer plants with presence — expressive leaves, interesting form, or special texture. We don't work with huge stocks. We buy frequently, in controlled quantities, to ensure every plant reaches you in good shape.

02

Preparing the roots

Before becoming a kokedama, the plant is removed from its original substrate. The roots are gently cleaned and assessed — we check their condition, remove anything unhealthy, and let them breathe. This step is quiet and slow. It can't be rushed without harming the plant.

03

The substrate

The heart of every MORI kokedama is made with different types of substrates, depending on the type of plant. We chose natural materials because they retain moisture evenly, allow air circulation around the roots, and are lightweight — important for suspended kokedamas. The substrate is hydrated and mixed until it reaches the right consistency — not too dry, not too wet. Then it's shaped around the roots with firm pressure and patient hands.

04

Coconut fiber

The outer layer is coconut fiber — natural, dried, and sustainable. Applied by hand, piece by piece, covering the substrate sphere completely. The coconut fiber isn't just aesthetic: it helps retain moisture and protects the roots. Each kokedama comes out slightly different. The shape, the texture, the tone of the coconut — nothing is exactly the same. That's intentional.

05

The thread

To hold the fiber in place and give the sphere its form, we use natural cotton thread. Wound by hand, with consistent tension, in patterns that vary slightly from piece to piece. On suspended kokedamas, we make copper threads that allow the piece to hang — tested to hold the weight safely.

06

The rest

Once finished, the kokedama rests. We let it stabilise before packing — to ensure the coconut fiber adheres well, the sphere holds its shape, and the plant adjusts to its new environment. Only after being checked is a piece ready to go.

07

The packaging

Each kokedama is individually packed in a reinforced cardboard box with sustainable filling. We always include a care card and a QR code linking to the full guide. The box is designed to protect life — simple, but never careless.
